Corona and Plasma treatments: the importance of laboratory testing

Eng. Elena Zucchetti, Laboratory Manager, explains how she researches substrates to identify and set up the most effective and sustainable surface treatment for each need.

What are the main requirements of customers who seek the laboratory's help?

Customers need to optimize the surface properties of their substrates (by increasing surface tension values) to improve the quality of printing, coating and marking, and the effectiveness of adhesion and bonding processes.

When substrates are stored for a long time, their surface properties deteriorate. In such cases, customers come to us to measure the time degradation and possibly apply a "refresh" treatment. This can restore the substrate to its original properties, increase surface tension, and recover useful substrate by reducing scrap production.

What equipment do you use in the Laboratory to perform the tests?

We use our Corona treatment systems to test any type of conductive and non-conductive flat surfaces.

On the other hand, we make use of our Plasma treatment systems, along with the aid of a collaborative robot, to treat objects with complex non-planar shapes.

Finally, we perform surface tension tests with liquid Dyne Test Inks.

How do you share the information gathered in the Laboratory with the customer?

We prepare a Report with the most relevant information about the test results and suggest the most appropriate technology to achieve the desired result.

Sending the report is often followed by a phone call to discuss the details and agree on the next steps.

Does the lab offer other services besides substrate testing?

The lab also offers large sample testing services (up to 100 samples of different types) for customers who want to evaluate the integration of our treatment systems into their lines with reliable and timely statistics. It is also possible to schedule a test day directly at the customer's site.

How does the laboratory add to the company's expertise?

We have the opportunity to develop new corona and plasma applications in the various target industries by conducting tests on customer materials.

Through the laboratory, we can research the surface properties of a wide variety of materials and share our knowledge and expertise by participating in trade shows, conferences, seminars, and publishing technical and popular articles.

Our mission includes researching new applications and sharing knowledge.
