Company case: Secad – Adhesive Solutions

Secad specializes in the production of customized adhesive and double-sided adhesive solutions. Thanks to its in-house laboratory, the company develops new formulations and improves existing ones.

Since 1982, Secad has been developing and manufacturing self-adhesive solutions using acrylic, silicone and rubber resins, with three coating lines:

  1. Solvent M1
  2. UV Hot-Melt M2
  3. SSA technology M3

The company also has a UV pilot plant for sampling and testing.

The main application sectors for Secad adhesive and double-sided adhesive materials are medical, cosmetics, construction, automotive, aerospace, food & beverage and fashion.

Its product range includes UV-curable solutions, solvent-based adhesives, coating solutions, silicone adhesive tapes, non-woven adhesive solutions, low- and high-temperature adhesives, and solvent-resistant adhesives.

When designing an adhesive formulation, Secad evaluates the resins, their compatibility with the substrates and their ability for coating. Tests carried out in climatic and accelerated ageing chambers measure adhesion, cohesion and long-term resistance.

The need

The quality of the adhesive solutions developed by Secad also depends on the correct preparation of the substrates, a key step in ensuring reliable performance.

To treat the substrates that are subsequently coated with adhesive-improving adhesion and preventing delamination, Secad uses corona treatment.

After purchasing its first corona treater from Ferrarini & Benelli in 2015, Secad strengthened the partnership thanks to the results achieved and the technical support provided.

The solution

Secad's production lines are highly customized and marked by limited installation space. For this reason, the Ferrarini & Benelli technical team carried out an on-site survey at the customer's facility to measure the equipment and develop a tailor-made solution, optimizing the machine design according to the available space. To date, we have supplied:

  • 2 Poliplast corona treaters with high-efficiency multi-point electrodes and a quick air-gap adjustment system. This allows the treatment system to be rapidly adapted to the thickness of the different materials being processed, including plastic substrates and foams used in the production of double-sided adhesive tapes.
  • 2 Evo Smart generators, ready to be connected to the F&B Cloud platform for real-time monitoring of operating parameters and data processing to support quality certifications. The generators are also compliant with Industry 4.0 requirements, and their functions can be integrated into the PLC production line.
  • An ozone destruction system for the ozone generated by corona discharge. This allows compliance with current regulations on atmospheric emissions and supports companies such as Secad that are committed to environmental sustainability.
  • An ET98 laboratory line, designed for an innovative pilot line used to test different substrates. This solution eases material threading while providing a high degree of versatility.

Given the wide range of materials processed by Secad, some of which are particularly innovative, treatment tests were carried out at the Ferrarini & Benelli Laboratory to determine the required power levels and identify the most suitable treatment parameters.

The interview

What are Secad's requirements regarding surface treatment?

We often need to treat the substrates that we coat with adhesive, in order to improve adhesion and prevent delamination. Insufficiently treated material could cause critical issues, and any material scrap at this stage of the process would be extremely costly for us.

What led you to start working with Ferrarini & Benelli?

We purchased our first corona treater from Ferrarini & Benelli and were very satisfied with the experience because it is a dynamic company with highly specialized personnel.

The mechanical designer immediately understood our requirements and found the right application solutions, even when the available physical space was limited.

The laboratory technicians also supported us with treatment tests, which are the basis on which we can make decisions and propose solutions to our customers.

How have the corona solutions adopted helped you achieve your production and quality objectives?

Thanks to the installed systems, we can offer our customers a wide range of products.

The unlimited-time cloud storage of data provided by the new generators is a valuable support for our quality control procedures.

How would you sum up your experience with Ferrarini & Benelli solutions?

Expertise, professionalism and after-sales support.
