The manufacturers of lithium batteries require that all internal components be perfectly welded to obtain a great performance, especially if batteries are used in complex electrical systems or for manufacturing sophisticated electronics.
The substrates used to manufacture lithium batteries need to undergo several processes, including a special coating stage, cutting and calendaring. The targeted action of plasma treatment optimises the surface features of these substrates, protecting their chemical-physical features and preparing them for any subsequent stage.
As for batteries components - including anodes, cathodes and separator materials - achieving the correct surface tension is key, as surface tension impacts the way in which batteries perform, especially their capacity, impedance and charge and discharge rate.
Coating the inner components of batteries is important to determine their weight and thickness:
- Thicker coatings increase capacity and decrease the recharge speed
- Slimmer coatings decrease capacity and increase the recharge speed.
Integrating a plasma treatment system into the production line of lithium batteries allows to activate the surface (before the welding stage of components) and to optimise adhesion as well as the way the product performs.
Plasma treatment allows to accurately clean the surface of lithium batteries components before welding, in order to get rid of dirt (contaminating agents or particles on the surface) which prevent welding from occurring correctly.
Moreover, the installation of a plasma treatment system allows to avoid the presence of air among components which may prevent the battery from working or even, in the worst cases, lead to short-circuits or concrete safety risks.
